Celebrations

Like other Christians, the Portuguese community in Melaka also celebrates religious festivals such as Christmas, Holy Week, Good Friday dan Easter. However, there are some special festivals celebrated on a large scale in the Portuguese Village, which are the Festival of St. Peter, Intrudu Festival and the Festival of St. John.

Festival Of St. Peter

The Festival of St. Peter or also known as the San Pedro Festival is a festival that celebrates fishermen. This festival is celebrated on 29th June every year on a grand scale since the 1950s. This festival is held to glorify St. Peter who is one of the followers of Jesus. During this festival, the villagers will come out in large numbers to have fun while decorating the boats.

The boats are colourfully decorated with small flags and various symbols are placed including pictures of St. Peter that are plastered on every participating boat. Certain passages from the Bible are also displayed on the boards on the boats to ask for their sustenance to be blessed with more fishing catches in the future. This festival lasts up to three days with various activities such as cultural performances, dances and singing as well as traditional food and drink.

Festival Of St. John

The Festival of St. John or Festival De San Jao is celebrated on 23rd June every year. This festival is celebrated to mark the coming of Jesus. As a symbolic celebration of the coming of Jesus, the residents of the Portuguese Village will decorate the windows and verandas of their homes. Meanwhile in every corner of the house candles will be lit. The children will march towards the beach wearing green clothes called 'vestido verde' as a sign of joy to welcome the arrival of Jesus.

Intrudu Festival

The Intrudu Festival is held on February 18 every year. It is celebrated by holding a water-splashing event among family members. In the afternoon, the villagers will march out in colourful clothes. This festival is further enlivened with the sale of sweets and traditional Portuguese food. The selling price at this festival is cheaper because it is a charity sale and usually if there is a balance, the buyer does not ask for the balance to be returned.

According to the belief of the Portuguese community, during this festival, Jesus was resurrected and raised to heaven. In addition, this festival is enlivened with a dance ceremony for three consecutive days and on the last day, they will come out en masse to attend a prayer ceremony marking the end of the Intrudu festival.
